2 Pounds of Pastrami Sammy in 48 Minutes is Local Man's Challenge
Cupertino's Bear Silber will attempt to eat the giant Togo's sandwich at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Crudely shoveling food down one's throat while smearing juices and crumbs across one's face is not what Bear "Jughead" Silber has in mind when he steps up to two pounds of pastrami sandwich he's says he'll devour in record time at Togo's on Saturday.
"I much prefer to eat how one would normally eat a meal--'picnic style'. You would normally eat pancakes with a fork and knife and you wouldn't dunk your pastrami sandwich in water. I like to enjoy and taste the food," Silber says.
At 2 p.m. on Feb. 4 at the Togo's Sandwich shop on Stevens Creek Boulevard, Silber will belly up to a sandwich for a "Double Pounder Challenge", which is two sandwiches worth and more than two pounds of food.
"When I first heard about the challenge I didn't know which sandwich it was. When I heard it was their No. 9 (pastrami) I knew I had to do it. I love their pastrami sandwich," he says.
The company promoted a Pounder Challenge in January, but Silber pooh-poohs that contest.
"The regular Pounder Challenge was just not enough. Two feet of their delicious No. 9 in 30 minutes? Please! So I figured why not double it. So I've got to eat four feet in 48 minutes, which is the length of time the Giants and Patriots are going to be playing football for Sunday," he says.
Silber, 29, is a hometown boy. He grew up in Los Altos, graduated from Oak Grove High School in San Jose, and now lives in Cupertino. He works in marketing and social media for a candy company, he says, adding a "yum" to that statement.
"I love food. I've always felt that I could eat endlessly, and this just proves it."
At a lean 5-feet 9-inches, 130 pounds, that two pounds of sammy is going to leave behind a belly bump.
"I like to see the look on people's faces when they see that I can eat nearly 6,000 calories, the equivalent of 125 buffalo wings, in one sitting. I just also like to do things out of the ordinary. Most people don't eat over a 1/100 of a football field in 48 minutes."
Did he say 6,000 calories? Yes.
"The regular sized sandwich is 770 calories and the Pastrami Pounder is a family size sandwich and is 3,020 calories but is also not normally designed for one person to eat," said spokesman Stephen Gregg.
Silber doesn't make eating his career choice such as Joey Chestnut, and he doesn't want to compete at the same level, he says.
"The biggest difference between him and I is the style of eating. In most of the IFOCE (International Federation of Competitive Eating) they allow you to pretty do anything to get the food in and down; grabbing, tearing, dipping. I like to enjoy and taste the food," he says.
Prep for the challenge will include copious amounts of water to "stretch out the stomach" and a "large amount of high volume/low calorie foods the day before."
If watching someone gorge pastrami is your kind of free weekend entertainment, watch Silber in action starting at 2 p.m. at 21265 Stevens Creek Blvd.
