5 Things To Know About Cupertino

Here are five things to know about Cupertino:

1. A Big Check Equals Big Support: Fremont Union High Schools Foundation gave a check for $226,000 to the Fremont Union High School District (FUHSD) to “support student programs in media and communications, robotics and engineering, and business and entrepreneurship as well as support of School Loop, an online system that connects the district’s 10,500 students and their parents with teachers, counselors, coaches and others with a vested interest in the student’s success, and Naviance, an online system that allows students to search for colleges and careers and develop post-graduation plans,” according to the district.
2. A Big Band Equals a Big Crowd: FUHSD took time out before the district board meeting to celebrate the success of this year’s band expo on Oct. 1. It drew its largest crowd ever and featured more than 800 marching band students from the district’s five high schools at the 9th Annual Fremont Union High School District Band Expo.
3. It's Voting Season: Monday, Oct. 24 is the last day to register to vote for Cupertino’s upcoming Nov. 8 election. Voters will select two candidates for City Council and decide on Measure C, which if passed would raise the existing transient occupancy tax—the tax paid by hotel guests—to 12 percent from 10 percent of the hotel room rate charge. Measure C funds would go to maintenance of general city services such as library services, road maintenance, 9-1-1 services, police patrols and school and traffic safety, including crossing guards.
4. Be Safe and Be Prepared: The City of Cupertino has made safety hip with its Friday release of its very own app “Ready 95014”. It's an emergency preparedness tool, which Rick Kitson, city spokesman, says will be one way people in the city can find out what’s going on in the event of a natural disaster. If electricity is out and landline phones are down, the app will be a communication device from to residents through streaming Radio Cupertino. There are also helpful tips on how to prepare for emergencies such as fire, flood or earthquake, and what to do if one of those events occurs.
5. Learn More About Your Candidates: The third candidate forum for Cupertino City Council is scheduled on Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Cupertino Community Hall, 10350 Torre Ave. This event is sponsored by the Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association and will be televised live on the City Channel as well as streamed live on the City’s website.
