Bunnies Make Good Pets, Too

Adoption fairs with adoptable bunnies will be held Feb. 18 in Sunnyvale and Feb. 19 in Campbell.

Rabbits can be excellent pets. They are more social that you might imagine and enjoy interacting with humans. They’re very curious, playful and affectionate. And many rabbits can be trained to use a litter box.

When my husband and I were first married, we adopted a red satin rabbit named Ginger. True to his breed, he had the softest fur. He also had quite a personality! He would stomp his foot on the floor when he didn’t get his way. Ginger came already litter box trained and fortunately our landlord allowed us to have a rabbit as a pet.

Rabbits do best living indoors with a designated space of their own. They eat hay, pellets and fresh greens. Our rabbit preferred the carrot tops to the actual carrots and loved kale. Rabbits live between 7 to 10 years on average, so adopting a bunny is a commitment. If you do adopt a rabbit, you’ll need to find a veterinarian who specializes in treating small animals. Because rabbits are prey animals, they are less likely to exhibit symptoms when sick, so getting educated on the signs of a sick bunny are critical.

Rabbit Rescue Groups

There are a number of rescue organizations in the South Bay that help homeless bunnies get adopted, including the Rabbit Haven and SaveABunny. The Humane Society Silicon Valley and the Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority also have rabbits available for adoption.

The Rabbit Haven is holding an adoption fair on Saturday, Feb. 18 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at For Other Living Things in Sunnyvale. Rabbit Haven representatives will be on hand to answer your questions about caring for rabbits. For more information, visit the Rabbit Haven website.

On Sunday, Feb. 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., SaveABunny will have an adoption showcase at Pet Food Express in Campbell. If you’re already a rabbit parent, you can bring your bunny by for a free nail trim. For more information, visit the SaveABunny website.

Pet of the Week

This week’s pet looking for a home is Steve, a beautiful bunny. He has a curious, sweet personality and would make a perfect companion bunny. And who wouldn’t love a rabbit named Steve?

For more information about Steve and other bunnies in need of homes, visit the SaveABunny website.

I have an adorable Lionhead bunny that has been my pet since he was three months old. He is now almost six. He lives indoors in his large (self made) cage. He comes out to play every evening for several hours to play and get exercise. Choose your pet(s) carefully, please. They deserve love, respect and a wonderful home.
