CHP Issues 425 Tickets For 'Distracted Driving' in April

Citations were issued for using cell phones while driving and texting while driving, and other distractions. One person was arrested for DUI.

The California Highway Patrol issued 426 tickets during April's "Distracted Driving" campaign month, up and down the Peninsula, from Millbrae to Mountain View, and along state Highway 85.

More than 340 tickets were for using a cell phone while driving, said CHP Officer Arturo Montiel.

Twenty-nine tickets were issued for texting while driving, and 53 for other distractions while driving. These included violating the Basic Speed law and making unsafe turns.

One driver stopped for using a cell phone was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Two were cited for being under the age of 18 and using a cell phone while driving.

Lest you think that the crackdown was unbending, another 138 drivers got off with a warning.

The Redwood City Office's jurisdiction covers all interstate and state highways along a good part of the Peninsula south of Millbrae. Along Interstate 280, this extends as far south as Magdalena Avenue in Los Altos Hills. Along Highway 1, the district extends from Devil's Slide to Half Moon Bay. From west to east, that covers most of the Dumbarton Bridge to the first exit off the bridge. It includes almost all of Highway 85, Montiel said.

The CHP joined with more than 280 other law enforcement agencies in the first statewide Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
