Church Swaps Worship Service for Volunteer Work

Congregation will take to the streets to provide service to the community.

The Sanctuary will be empty on Sunday, April 28, at West Valley Presbyterian Church in Cupertino, but the congregation will still gather.

But instead of worshiping through music and teaching, they’ll be worshiping through volunteer work.

For the last three years, the church has sent its congregation to serve the community through a quarterly event called “Service Worship.” There are opportunities for every member of the congregation to serve – from children to senior citizens – and on most occasions there are more than a dozen different projects available.

The church has established partnerships with other churches that are now mirroring the program. Partners include Good Samaritan Methodist Church in Cupertino and First Presbyterian San Jose.

The community regularly supports the efforts of West Valley Community Services, CityTeam, InnVision, Habitat for Humanity, local Senior Centers and neonatal intensive care units. The church is now establishing partnerships with local businesses, and hosting service opportunities at Caffe Adria in San Jose.

This event is open to everyone in the community who would like to volunteer. It starts at 9:15 a.m. in the church courtyard and will begin with a short commissioning before the volunteers depart.  At the end of the day the congregation will meet again for a community dinner with time set aside for worship and reflection.

West Valley Presbyterian Church is at 6191 Bollinger Road, Cupertino. It is led by Senior Pastor Dr. Kim Engelmann.
