Plenty of Pets Looking for Their Forever Homes

According to the Humane Society Silicon Valley, there are hundreds of homeless animals in the South Bay right now, and thousands in need of homes each year.

To help lower these numbers, six shelters are working together to find homes for 1,000 dogs, cats and rabbits during the month of December. These shelters are offering a special $10 adoption fee, with some exceptions for animals less than six months of age. Check with each shelter for specific details.

Participating shelters and rescue groups are the Humane Society Silicon Valley, City of Palo Alto Animal Services, Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority, Santa Clara County Animal Control Shelter, City of San Jose Animal Control and Services and Town Cats.

Most veterinarians and animal behaviorists caution against giving pets as Christmas gifts because adopting a pet is a commitment of time and energy and should be taken by the owner rather than given to someone as a surprise. However, if your family is serious about adopting a dog or cat, this is a good time to do so.

This lovely feline is Misty, a seven-year-old Maine Coon mix in need of a forever home. She can be shy when she first meets you, but warms up once she gets to know you.

She prefers to keep her paws on the ground instead of being picked up, but dearly loves being petted. She would thrive in a home where she would be able to lounge around and relax.
