A Visit to USS Hornet with Discounted Tickets

Take advantage of a Living Social deal to get 50 percent off admission.

Editor's note: This article by Parke Ballantine originally ran on Patch in May, 2011. We are reintroducing it in case readers would like to learn more about the USS Hornet and take advantage of a Living Social deal, which is offering a 50 percent off admission for two adult and two child admission tickets. The other day, my son, husband and I were off to the USS Hornet, an aircraft carrier in Alameda.  I have to say that this was my husband's idea.  Our son is enthusiastic about World War 2 (WW2) and hubby likes to support his learning.  Not that I don't, of course, but, left on my own I probably wouldn't search out a WWII ship for our weekend adventure.   My husband did all the driving.  The mystery of where we were going made it fun–he …

Rare Steve Jobs Footage Coming to Cupertino Friday

"Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview" will be shown for a week at BlueLight Cinemas starting May 11.

During the making of the 1995 TV series Triumph of the Nerds, Steve Jobs candidly spilled his thoughts on video for an hour—after which most of the footage was thought to be lost. Recovered only recently in the form of a VHS copy in the director’s garage, the interview was remastered for the big screen. On Friday, it makes its one-week run at BlueLight Cinemas in Cupertino. “Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview” spotlights Bob Cringely’s memorable brain-picking session with the late Apple founder, 10 years after he left the company following a fall-out with then-CEO John Sculley.  At the time, Jobs was running niche computer company NeXT, which he would later sell before returning to Apple.  In the interview, Jobs foresees technological …

Quilts for Kids: Stitches of Love—Part 2

Quilts made by the Silicon Valley Quilts for Kids provide love, warmth, and memories for area's children.

Editor's note: This is second in a two-part series on Silicon Valley Quilts for Kids. Part 1 of Stitches of Love can be found here. During a typical workshop, held on the second and fourth Monday of the month and lasting from 12 to 4 p.m., quilters come and go; some stay the duration and some pop in with quilts in hand to show off their craftsmanship. The quilts made at home and during these workshops by members of Silicon Valley Quilts for Kids are donated mostly to seriously ill, injured or abused children. Most of the sewing happens at home, but SVQFK members attend the workshops to swap fabrics, exchange ideas and see what each other are working on. “This group consists of a lot of people who like to quilt but they’ve exhausted all …

Stitches of Love—Part 1

Silicon Valley Quilts for Kids passes along hand-made comfort to local children who are ill, injured or abused, one quilt at a time.

Swathes of fabric in every color rise from floor to ceiling in the airy upstairs room of Eddie's Quilting Bee in Sunnyvale. Large, intricate quilts drape the walls, wrapping the five ladies who are digging through boxes of patterned scraps, iron-pressing squares of cloth and running colors through sewing machines in a comforting embrace. It's April 23 and the second meeting of the month for Silicon Valley Quilts for Kids, a nonprofit group that has grown from 9 members to 22 since it first convened in September 2011. The group designs, stitches and donates quilts made by its members to seriously ill, injured or abused children. “I was visiting a QFK club in Florida and I thought it was a fun group,” said Bonnie Stearns, the founder of the …

Lunafest Showcases 'Lady Razorbacks', a Story of a Women's Rugby Team

Filmmaker Laura Green's look at an East Palo Alto team of women who find common ground on the field. The movie screens at BlueLight Cinemas April 15.

Athletic and masculine rugby players normally don’t conjure up images of women, but for women’s rugby team, East Palo Alto Razorbacks, it’s a story of hardship and finding community. Local Bay Area filmmaker Laura Green uncovers the harsh realities of young Pacific Islander women who try to form a sanctuary in a tough neighborhood through the sport. Green’s documentary Lady Razorbacks is one of nine chosen films that will be displayed at Sunday’s Lunafest at BlueLight Cinemas. The Lady Razorbacks team is unique because it features Tongans, Fijians and Samoan women with diverse backgrounds playing rugby and expressing new ways to reach out and support one another. “The film is about this group of women starting a team and some of the things…

Exploring Marin Leads to Happy Mistakes

A desire to see the Marin County Civic Center leads finding a great place for kids to play.

Sometimes you just have to take the plunge, even if it doesn't end up how you would have wanted it. When I take spur-of-the-moment trips with my son around the Bay Area they are just that, unplanned. I get something in my head that I'm curious about and I decide it is a good idea to go exploring. That's my way. My husband's way to go on outings is to research first. He knows exactly where to go because he's looked at a map. He knows the times the place is open and, if money is involved, how much. This is a good policy for pretty much everything. But, I rarely follow it. I dive right in and usually something comes out. In this case, it was a trip to the Marin County Civic Center, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. My folks have an architect …

The red carpet rollout begins at 2 p.m. and the film screen starts at 3 p.m. What began in 2000 as a single fundraising event by nutrition bar-maker LUNA to promote women’s health is now a traveling film festival that visits 150 cities every year. Lunafest has raised more than $785,000 for women’s community nonprofit organizations since its inception. Jackie Cohen, owner of BlueLight Cinemas, hopes to raise $2,000 or more in Cupertino’s Lunafest, which is hosted by TWIGS, a chapter of Quota International, a service …
