Dog-Friendly Activities in the South Bay

From parades to outdoor movies, we have a short list for you and your pooch.

Summer is in full swing, and it’s great opportunity to get out with your four-legged friends. Here are ideas for some fun and safe things you can do.

Parade Your Pooch

In celebration of Bastille Day, LB Steak in Santana Row is hosting a “Poodles on Parade” event on Sunday, July 15. Although poodles are featured in the title, all dog breeds are welcomed to come strut their stuff down the red carpet.

The cost is $10 and the proceeds benefit the Hospice of the Valley’s pet companion program. Prizes will be awarded to the best dressed, most talented and crowd favorite. For more details, visit the Santana Row website.

See a Movie

Downtown Campbell hosts outdoor movies on Friday nights now through August. is in the parking lot next to near North Central and East Campbell avenues. Seating begins at 6:30 p.m., and the movie starts as soon as it’s dark enough.

Sundown Cinema is quite popular, and organizer Sheldon Chang recommends dog owners seek a spot toward the right or left side of the lot, because there’s a little more room. This Friday, July 13, it’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” and the following Friday is “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” For the complete schedule, .

Guard Against Rattlesnakes

If you and your dog like to go hiking, you might want to sign your dog up for a rattlesnake aversion clinic. Rattlesnakes are prevalent in Santa Clara County trails and about six people are bitten each year. Rattlesnake avoidance training teaches your dog to avoid rattlesnakes through the sense of sight, scent and sound. The rattlesnakes used in the training are muzzled so that no harm comes to you or your dog.

The Northern California Alaskan Malamute Association (NCAMA) is hosting a clinic on July 28 and 29 in Livermore. The cost is $75. For more information, visit the NCAMA website.

Pet of the Week

Meet Alex, a 6-month-old American pit bull mix. Alex had one of his legs amputated because of an injury, but that hasn’t slowed him down any. He’s a exuberant, loving pup looking for a family who can work with him on basic puppy obedience and in turn, he’ll be your faithful friend. For more information about Alex and other dogs available for adoption, visit the Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) website.

On Sunday, July 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the HSSV is hosting a Baby Boom Adoption Fair at its Milpitas headquarters. HSSV experienced a baby boom this spring and has lots of kittens, puppies, bunnies and baby guinea pigs looking for forever homes. Visit the HSSV website to see some of the adorable pets available for adoption.

It's difficult to know what's going on in a kid's mind unless they feel confident enough to open upRead More and talk. And this program helps us adults to learn to listen differently.

I too was at this Challenge Day. It was my 6th. I first volunteered because I watched the programRead More on MTV "If You Really Knew Me" when my son was being severely bullied in middle school and saw the program was offered when he was a freshman in high school. My company strongly supports me volunteering for this and allows me to take the day off work to attend. I am continually humbled by what these teens share and saddened at what some of them have experienced in their short lives. This program is so valuable. I think every school should offer it and every parent should attend. It helps us to realize that we need to think twice before we judge or assume things about others when we know nothing about them. It is the volunteering opportunity that I look forward to participating in every year.
