Friends Of The Cupertino Library Host Another Used-Book Sale

Cupertino organization sells more than 10,000 books in three weekends this year to benefit local community.

The Friends of the Cupertino Library hosted one of their quarterly used-book sales Saturday and Sunday at the Cupertino Community Hall.

According to the Friends of the Cupertino Library Vice President Kathy Stakey, the group hosts three used-book sales a year, and usually sells more than 10,000 books over that time.

“We are probably the least expensive of all book sales in the area,” said Stakey. “But our main mission is to encourage literacy. “

Stakey, who served as president for eight years, said that the "Friends" were able to donate $85,000 raised from book sales to remodel the Cupertino Library’s teen room in the past, and donate $10,000 annually to the Santa Clara County Bookmobile, which delivers books to senior citizens, individuals with physical limitations and county residents who live in geographically remote areas.

Proceeds also go toward resources for "Friends" to sponsor their English and Chinese adult, and Tween book clubs as well as the Library’s End Of The Summer reading program.

Stakey also said that one of the best features of the book sale is the children’s area, which, for a few areas in the morning, is only accessible to children and no adults, and books are as cheap as 25 and 50 cents.

She also mentioned that the weekend’s book sale was staffed by more than a dozen "Friends" and 15 to 18 Interact Club students from Homestead High School.

“We’re one of those organizations where 10 percent of the members do 90 percent of the work,” Stakey said.

More than 100 community members came out to this weekend’s book sale to pick up some affordable reading material. Chicago resident Sue Geden was in town this weekend visiting her daughter and grandchildren when she decided to take them to see the library on Sunday and pick up some new books.

“We came down here to check out the new library because we all haven’t seen it and it’s beautiful,” Geden said. “We’re already on our second bag of books.”

The Friends Of The Cupertino Library will be hosting their used-book sale next year during the weekends of Feb. 11 and 12, May 12 and 13 and Oct. 13 and 14.
