Get Out in Cupertino: A Citywide Garage Sale, Homestead High Football and More

The Homestead High football team looks to stay perfect, Karaoke at Homestead Lanes and more this week in Cupertino.

Where/When: Retro Dome, 1694 Saratoga Ave, San Jose, CA. Sunday, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. 

Why Go: "Long Live Life" presented by the Retro Dome in collaboration with the San José Chamber Orchestra and the National Jewish Theater Festival is an evening of affirmation and remembrance of the Jewish experience through music and text.  Performers include a string quartet from the San José Chamber Orchestra, a pianist, and singers Stephen Guggenhiem, tenor, Layna Chianakas, mezzo-soprano, Allison Charney, soprano and Kevin Nakatani, bass. All the music was written by prominent composers while they were detained at the Theresienstadt concentration camp during the Holocaust.

Pricing: $50

Where/When: Fremont High School, 1279 Sunnyvale Saratoga Rd, Sunnyvale, CA. Friday, 7:30 p.m. 

Why Go: The Homestead High football team squares off against Fremont High in Sunnyvale Friday night. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the non-league contest. Homestead defeated The King's Academy 35-7 on Sept. 8 to improve to 2-0 this fall. The Mustangs and their power running attack open league play on Sept. 30 at defending CIF and Central Coast Section champion Palo Alto High. Senior tailback Tyler Bond leads Homestead with 178 yards rushing and four touchdowns in 2011.

Where/When: Casa de Fruta, 10031 Pacheco Pass Hwy, Hollister, CA. Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

Why Go: Join the villagers of Willingtown as they celebrate Bacchanal and the traditional feast of Michelmas. This weekend is a visual treat as garlands and masks are donned by men and women. Patrons are encouraged to wear a mask and/or garland. A beautiful selection of both can be found at the faire, or you may choose to have a mask painted on. Each weekend provides a new adventure an the annual faire. Don't miss out on all the mischief and fun to be had!

Pricing: $25 general admission. $35 for a weekend pass. 

Where/When: Various locations across the city. Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

Why Go: The annual Citywide Garage Sale is here! A handful of sites have already been posted on the Cupertino.org city website. The printed copy of the list will be available at City Hall, Quinlan Community Center, Cupertino Senior Center, and the Cupertino Library. The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24 and Sunday, Sept. 25. Go get your list, drive around town and shop this weekend in Cupertino!

Where/When: , 20990 Homestead Rd, Cupertino, CA. Friday, 9 p.m. 

Why Go: Karaoke with DJ Vinnie and Avent's Empty Band rocks out The X Bar at Homestead Lanes in Cupertino every Friday night at 9 p.m. Check out the full show schedule and look up your karaoke songs in advance! Must be 21 and over.

I too was at this Challenge Day. It was my 6th. I first volunteered because I watched the programRead More on MTV "If You Really Knew Me" when my son was being severely bullied in middle school and saw the program was offered when he was a freshman in high school. My company strongly supports me volunteering for this and allows me to take the day off work to attend. I am continually humbled by what these teens share and saddened at what some of them have experienced in their short lives. This program is so valuable. I think every school should offer it and every parent should attend. It helps us to realize that we need to think twice before we judge or assume things about others when we know nothing about them. It is the volunteering opportunity that I look forward to participating in every year.
