Get Out in Cupertino: The 8th Annual Diwali Festival, Monta Vista-Lynbrook Football and More

The 8th annual Diwali Festival will take place Saturday at Memorial Park in Cupertino.

Where/When: , 201 Almond Ave., Los Altos. Thursday, 7 p.m. 

Why Go: The MVLA School Speaker Series presents "From Princess to Pop-Tarts: What the New Culture of Girlhood Means for Girls and the Grown-Ups Who Care About Them". Peggy Orenstein, the author of the New York Times Best Seller, Cinderella Ate My Daughter, will examine several issues girls are confronting and suggest ways for kids, teens and parents to combat such obstacles.

Where/When: 562 N Britton Ave., Sunnyvale. Friday, 7:30 p.m. 

Why Go: The Monta Vista High football team opens Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division play on Friday night against Lynbrook High. The game will be played at The King's Academy in Sunnyvale. Monta Vista failed to slow down the mighty Los Gatos High rushing attack last week, falling 61-6 to the 'Cats. Now 2-2 overall, Monta Vista plays an upstart Lynbrook team led by head coach Ray Wright and quarterback Kalvin Zee. The Vikings rolled over Fremont High-Sunnyvale 35-7 in their El Camino opener last weekend. Lynbrook is 3-2 overall.

Why Go: The 8th annual festivities will include a wonderful feast of food, business and craft booths, music and dance including a traditional Rangoli display. The elaborate Kids Zone will be packed throughout the day with children visiting the magic show, petting zoo, pony rides, wood workshop, face painting and coloring contests.

Pricing: Admission to the festival grounds is free with plenty of free parking available at De Anza College.

Where/When: , 158 University Ave., Palo Alto. Thursday, 6 p.m. 

Why Go: Green Halloween Palo Alto will feature a costume exchange, an eco fashion show, and complimentary food and drink including organic candy. In addition to a lively program of activities and entertainment, Green Halloween Palo Alto will feature clearly posted tips on how Halloween celebrations can be more eco friendly. Bring the family and pick out your costume for this year!

Where/When: Sears parking lot at Vallco Shopping Center, Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Why Go: A weekly event, the outdoor market atmosphere only gets better in the fall. Start your weekend adventures a little early and do some shopping through the wide array of vendors that sell everything from beets to fresh-cut flowers Friday morning in Cupertino. 

Pricing: Free

Where/When: 10031 Pacheco Pass Hwy, Hollister. Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

Why Go: Fairies and other mystical creatures will roam the grounds all weekend long during Fantasy Week at the annual Renaissance Faire in Casa de Fruta. Join Titania, the Queen of the Fairies, and others during the final weekend of the faire.
