The Santa Clara County Fair returns this week and will run at its old grounds in San Jose, 344 Tully Rd., noon to 9 p.m. Aug. 1-4.

The annual event's theme this year is, “Your Heart’s Delight,” derived from the Santa Clara Valley once known as “The Valley of the Heart’s Delight” due to its rich agriculture, at one time considered the largest fruit production and canning region in the world.

The Caravanserai band will be performing on the fair's last day, Sunday, Aug. 4 at 7:30 P.M. on the Christopher Park stage.

The fair will also feature the FIDO 500 Mini Dog Races where breeds such as Dachshunds, Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, and other canines will participate in this fun competition presented daily at 1, 4 and 7 p.m. each day of the event by Rocket’s K-9 Comets.

The dogs will compete for gold, silver and bronze as they race around the track in an Olympic style competition at the Fair Downs Lawn.

Last year, Steve Stagnaro, director of marketing for the fair, said attendance could be between 25,000 and 30,000.

The fair's admission was free during 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 because fairs were in decline, Stagnaro explained. Last year it went back to paid tickets and continues charging the public this year.

If fairgoers purchase their tickets before midnight, Aug. 1 they can receive discounts online by clicking here.

Pre-sale tickets for one-day admission are $6 for those ages 12-64, $3 for youth 11 and under and $3 for seniors 65 and older. Regular tickets for one-day admission are $8 for those ages 12-64, $5 for youth 11 and under and $5 for seniors 65 and older.

Run of the fair admission for those ages 12-64 for the four-day event is $20 pre-sale and $32 regular price and $14 pre-sale and $20 regular price for youth and seniors; parking for the four-day event is $15.
