Video of the Day: A Lifesize Lost in Space Robot

Andrew and Blake Filo demonstrated their home-built robot at Maker Faire.

Cupertino’s Blake Filo and his father Andrew Filo have been working on this life size replica of the Lost in Space robot for about six years.

“What’s different is the original Lost in Space robot was used for theatrical production. We’re building it as a real robot,” says Andrew. “It has 14 motors that control the arms and head.”

Every year the father-and-son team add something new. This year they’ve made it so they can control the robot from an iPhone.

They showed off the robot at Maker Faire, the giant DIY festival held May 21 and 22 in San Mateo.

That wasn’t all the Filo’s were sharing. Celebrating the 50-year anniversary of the jet pack, attendees could “fly” with the jet pack using a large screen monitor and a simulator designed to replicate a jet pack’s controls.
