A Poem about the Namesake of Apple

When the Steve Jobs biopic titled "Jobs" is in the movie theaters, it's timely to share the poem I wrote after watching a Youtube video clip of Jobs' answer to questions about how Apple was named.

The Namesake of Apple

Why was Apple named Apple?

Steve Jobs' answer was simple.

“Partially because I like apples a lot.”

He said with a cool smile, looking hot.

That was Jobs with a full head of hair in 1980

But will stay on Youtube indefinitely.

The forever young video clip presents Apple

As an ever-fresh symbol.

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”

Jobs said the apple symbolizes this motto without elaboration.

What is simple

And what is sophisticated about the apple?

Perhaps the simplicity comes from ubiquity

And the sophistication from folktales about the fruit throughout history,

Including the forbidden tree in the Garden of Eden

And the incident that inspired Isaac Newton.

As for Apple, which starts with a capital letter,

The rich symbol manifests itself in manufacture.

Sophistication describes what iPods, iPhones and iPads can do;

Simplicity means they are user friendly, too.

Do the two S's only apply to technology?

Why not transfer them to poetry

Where the two words have been antonyms for too long

Since anti-narratives came along?

Postmodern poetry has alienated the reader.

To unlock the barrier,

Jobs would probably agree---

The key is “reader friendly.”
