The Bloomsbury Children's Camp adheres to the six principles that Little House actively promotes throughout all of our programs and services: Physical Fitness, Nutrition, Socialization, Mental Stimulation, Sense of Purpose and Friendship. The Bloomsbury Group was a collection of influential English intellects and literary figures which held Virginia Woolf and E.M. Forster amongst their ranks. They put an emphasis on fulfilling all aspects of life and lived fully by observing the following motto:

“One’s prime objects in life are love, the creation and enjoyment of the aesthetic experience and the pursuit of
knowledge.”
-G.E. Moore

The four disciplinary topics - Gardening, Photography, Lapidary and Art - acutely speak to one or more of the six pillars. Children are exposed to several areas of interest that they wouldn't necessarily receive exposure to at a camp focused solely on one discipline. Furthermore, the time spent on each discipline is consuming enough to be both substantial and immersive. Over the course of two weeks, children will receive eleven hours of instruction on three of the topics and nine hours on the fourth topic. For all disciplines, this provides a suitable amount of time to give a broad overview of the subject as well as to
create something tangible to take away from the camp.

It's difficult to know what's going on in a kid's mind unless they feel confident enough to open upRead More and talk. And this program helps us adults to learn to listen differently.

I too was at this Challenge Day. It was my 6th. I first volunteered because I watched the programRead More on MTV "If You Really Knew Me" when my son was being severely bullied in middle school and saw the program was offered when he was a freshman in high school. My company strongly supports me volunteering for this and allows me to take the day off work to attend. I am continually humbled by what these teens share and saddened at what some of them have experienced in their short lives. This program is so valuable. I think every school should offer it and every parent should attend. It helps us to realize that we need to think twice before we judge or assume things about others when we know nothing about them. It is the volunteering opportunity that I look forward to participating in every year.
