Police Searching For Missing Man in Cupertino

The public is asked to call 911 if they find James Norberg, 63, 6-feet tall and of slender build. He is mute, so may not be able to speak clearly, police said.

Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputies sent up a helicopter and fanned out on foot Thursday afternoon and through the night hours, looking for a missing 63-year-old man with dementia, and asked the public's help in finding him.

James Norberg was last seen at 11 a.m., wearing a gray sweatshirt and jeans, and clad in brown slippers, his family told sheriff's deputies. He is mute, so may not be able to speak clearly, said Capt. Ken Binder of the West Valley division of the Sheriff's Office. 

"Please call 911 if you see him," Binder said. "We have deputies on the scene and have a search-and-rescue unit," he added. We are using a helicopter to search neighborhoods, parks and schools."  

The sheriff's department, through the city of Cupertino sent out this alert:

"Missing Person- At Risk: The Sheriff's Office is currently looking for 63 year old James Norberg. Mr. Norberg has dementia and is mute and unable to talk. He is on foot and last seen at 11 am in the area of Santa Teresa Drive at Rucker Drive, in Cupertino. Mr. Norberg is 6' tall with a slim build and walks with a shuffle. He was last seen wearing a gray shirt, blue jeans, brown slippers and black socks. The Sheriff's Search and Rescue Unit is searching the area, and the helicopter will also be flying over neighborhoods in an effort to locate Mr. Norberg. If you see him, please call 9-1-1 to report his location."

Norberg was last seen at his home near Santa Teresa Drive and Rucker Drive. He is Caucasian, 6-foot tall, of slender build, gray hair and brown eyes. 

His family reported him missing about 5 p.m.
