A Touch of New Orleans Comes to Saratoga

Louisiana Smokehouse Bistro serves up jambalaya, ribs and gumbo with a side of jazz.

Are you tired of bland California cuisine and seeking some good old-fashioned barbecue ribs? Then you might want to check out one of the newest restaurants in Saratoga: the Cajun inspired Louisiana Smokehouse Bistro.

Owners Holly Jafari and Clarence “Mo” Morris met by chance at a restaurant and the rest is history. Jafari, who works in high tech, and Morris, a trained chef, discovered that they both had a dream of opening a Louisiana style restaurant, according to Deni Green, owner of the nearby Azule Salon and a Saratoga Chamber of Commerce Ambassador. “Isn’t that the way a new business should start?” she asked with a laugh.

They purchased the Big Word Café on Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road (near Prospect), and changed the name but have incorporated some elements of the previous restaurant into their décor, such as the big overstuffed couches and coffee tables for clients to lounge in and read or listen to music.

However, they’ve totally transformed the menu to include all the spicy, Cajun and Creole flavor-infused food that can be found in a typical Canal Street joint. “Saratoga is in need of some good BBQ,” Morris said.

“I’m a chef from New Orleans and I wanted to cook the kind of food I was trained to cook at culinary school and at my family’s restaurant in New Orleans,” said Moore. “My specialties are BBQ ribs, jambalaya, gumbo, pulled pork sandwiches and the famous and delicious beignets (pastries).”

According to Green the food is “absolutely delicious,” and Morris is very high energy and friendly to every customer.

Business has been “Awesome” said Morris and picks up every day. It’s sure to pick up even further in a few months when the restaurant receives its liquor license.

“Everyone in Saratoga has embraced us with open arms. We have live jazz and blues music on Friday and Saturday nights and people love to just hang out and listen to the music,” Morris said.

The Saratoga Chamber of Commerce chose the Bistro to cater their next Chamber Mixer on January 3 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at nearby dentist Dr. Kiran Rapal’s office located at 12967 Saratoga Avenue, Saratoga.

Louisiana Smokehouse Bistro serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day and is located at 12241 Saratoga-Sunnyvale Rd, Saratoga, (408) 996-1616 and the website is www.louisianasmokehouse.com.
