Reach For The iCloud

A look at the iCloud announcement that came out of the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference.

At the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC,) Apple announced its iCloud service, which will allow users to store and automatically sync such data as music, photos, data and other files across multiple devices.

With the iCloud, Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, told conference-goers: "We're going to demote the PC and Mac to just be a device; just like an iPhone, an iPad, or an iPod Touch."

According to Bloomberg, a $1 billion data center in North Carolina will be the "backbone of the service that will" basically replace the not-so-popular MobileMe—which came with a $99 annual subscription fee—web-based service that never really took off and was plagued with problems.

Up to 5 gigabytes of storage will be free with the iCloud which will be included with the new iOS release expected in the fall.

Cloud computing is not new, and a Washington Post article points out that people may not even know they use cloud computing in applications such as Facebook, Flickr, and Gmail.
