Sunday Farmers Market Debuts Oct. 2

City's second farmers market opens at 9 a.m. on Sunday at the Oaks Shopping Center.

Getting a healthy dose of fresh fruits and veggies in Cupertino will be a piece of cake Sunday when the city's second farmers market opens at the Oaks Shopping Center.

"There will be French pastries, a lot of Asian veggies, various fruits, a smoked salmon vendor, and others," says Jerry Lami of West Coast Farmers Market Association.

Lami has at least 37 vendors signed up before the market's Sunday debut with a capacity to have 60, he says.

"My phone has been ringing off the hook. Vendors are dying to come here," he says.

Other vendors include a handful of arts and crafts, such as an artist who makes copper jewelry and another who makes tile-top tables.

"This market is primarily for the farmer," Lami says.

About half of the farmers grow organically farmed produce.

Lami is a product of the region himself, saying he grew up in Cupertino and has fond memories of the area.

"I rode my bike from home in Cupertino to St. Francis. I love this area," he says.

Parking on Sundays at the shopping center will be plentiful, Lami says, noting that there will be no overflow parking from De Anza, and some of the businesses in the center are closed on Sundays.

The market will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday (except Christmas and New Year's Sundays) and is located on the west side of the Oaks Shopping Center between the Blue Light Cinemas and Highway 85.
