Fall Pet Events Galore

Lots of pet-related events coming up, and one little guy named Charlie who needs a home.

Summer may be winding to a close, but that doesn’t mean pet-related events are slowing down anytime soon in the South Bay. Here's what scheduled for the next few weeks.

Get Your Bark On

This Saturday, Sept. 17, dog lovers won’t want to miss Bark in the Park at William Street Park in San Jose. This annual event is packed full of canine-friendly events including, a dog costume contest, silly dog tricks contest, tail wagging contest and a pet and owner look alike contest.

Dogs on leashes are welcome, and you and your dog can check out the dog agility course and dog water park or watch a flyball demonstration. Lots of animal rescue organizations will be there as well as vendors catering to pet parents. The fun starts at 10 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m.

A $5 donation is suggested and proceeds benefit the Humane Society Silicon Valley and the San Jose Animal Care Center. For more information, visit the Bark in the Park website.

Meet Your Match

On Saturday, Oct. 1 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) is holding a dog adoption “extravaganza” called “Barktoberfest.” This event features a wide variety of breeds and sizes and the opportunity for prospective pet parents to find the right dog that matches their personality and lifestyle.

Breeds include beagles, poodles, Chihuahuas, Rottweilers and pit bull terriers, to name a few. Barktoberfest also features “pawfurred pricing,” where adopters can name their adoption fee for dogs over the age of six months.

The event is at the society's center, 901 Ames Ave., Milpitas. For more information, check out the HSSV website.

Fight Canine Cancer

Cancer is the number one killer in adult dogs, and if you’d like to do something about it, participate in the K9 Cancer Walk on Sunday, Oct. 9 at Vasona Lake County Park in Los Gatos.

Walkers have a choice of participating in a 1.8 or .33 mile walk and all funds raised go directly toward research that will help dogs enjoy longer, healthier lives. Last year, the Golden Retrievers to the Rescue team raised nearly $7,000. In addition to the walk, there will be experts talking about cancer prevention and early detection and cancer research.

Register by Sept. 23 and save $5 on entry fees. For more information, visit the Morris Animal Foundation's Canine Cancer Campaign website and click on “Upcoming K9 Cancer Walks.”

Read Dog Tales

If you love dogs and want to learn more about them, check out the dog book reading club held at the Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) in Milpitas. It’s free and all ages are welcomed.

The next meeting is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25 and the book is, “The Other End of the Leash,” by Patricia B. McConnell. The reading club is facilitated by HSSV volunteer, Elizabeth Laverty. For more information, visit the HSSV website.

Pet of the Week

Meet Charlie, an adorable five- or six-year-old spaniel mix. Charlie is the perfect size—not too big, not too small—who would be a great addition to a family. He’s great with children and has an easygoing personality and besides, who can resist that smile?

For more information about Charlie, or other lovable dogs available for adoption, visit the Companion Animal Rescue Effort (CARE) website.
