Holiday Weekend DUI Arrests Up Over Last Year

Stepped up patrols will continue during the long Memorial Day weekend ending at midnight May 27.

The Memorial Day Weekend Driving Under the Influence enforcement effort in Santa Clara County has resulted in a significant number of arrests from local routine traffic enforcement and special Avoid the 13 DUI deployments.

From 12:01 a.m. Friday, May 24 through midnight Saturday, May 25, officers representing 13 county law enforcement agencies have arrested 37 people for driving under the influence or alcohol or drugs. Last year, 27 DUI arrest occurred during the same 48 hour period. These numbers are in comparison to last years’ totals during the first two days of the four-day enforcement period. 

DUI arrest data collection will continue through midnight Monday, May 27. In addition to efforts to curb DUI offenses by local and regional authorities, California Highway Patrol officers throughout the state have stepped up enforcement on freeways and county roads.   

Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Administration. Law enforcement officials throughout the area are asking anyone who sees a drunk driver to report it immediately by calling 911.
