Lane Closures on Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road Begin Saturday

One lane in each direction will remain open for weekend traffic.

Around-the-clock work on Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road and Calabazas Creek begins Saturday under the direction of Santa Clara Valley Water District.

One southbound and one northbound lane each of Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road will remain open during construction, according to Marty Grimes, program administrator at the agency.

The work will take place over two consecutive weekends—Aug. 20-21 and Aug. 27-28—to finish culvert work under the road. Lane closure will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday and run continuously through Sunday, with all lanes open by Monday morning.

“It’s been constructed in parts," Grimes said. "We completed about 15 feet of the 80-foot culvert last year. That included some very complex utility relocations. This summer, we are completing the remaining 65 feet along the southbound and median of the road.”

The culverts are being enlarged to allow for better channel crossing.

The work being done on the creek is a major part of the Calabazas Creek Flood Protection Project, which will protect more than 400 parcels from the 100-year flood. The work includes bank repairs along various portions of the creek in Cupertino, Saratoga and San Jose. The project included widening a Union Pacific Railroad bridge at a bridge crossing.

The agency has spent about $1.2 billion in just over 20 years on flood protection throughout its jurisdiction.
