Maker Faire Bay Area Calls for Makers

Maker Faire announced last week it is now accepting project submissions for this year’s festival.

Organizers expect to feature more than 700 Makers and their organizations in the seventh annual event that will be held in San Mateo, California. More than 100,000 people from all over the world are expected to attend.

The event is a physical extension of MAKE magazine, a publication in which the do-it-yourself mindset is glorified. Nurtured via step-by-step directions projects such as extreme marshmallow cannons, flame-throwing flowers, and all kinds of robots such as Cupertino father and son team,   Lost in Space robot are on display.

Last year the Filos showcased their robot by remote control using a programmed iPhone.

Other Cupertino Makers included Eric Stackpole who exhibited his ROV—remotely operated vehicle—a telerobotic submarine for underwater exploration. To illustrate how one would use the ROV, he tells an old Wild West tale of a Gold Rush robbery with gold hidden in a deep-water cave. The tale gets people listening, but what he really wants is to get more people interested in deep-water exploration.

And then there’s who shares projects based on Pixar movie characters.

Other cities have begun to host mini-maker faires in Detroit, New York, and Kansas City.

The Bay Area Maker Faire will be held on May 19 and 20 in the San Mateo Event Center.
