Neighbors Oppose Restaurant Drive-Through

Developer hopes to include a lane for cars at a proposed McDonald's near a Cupertino school.

More than 100 protestors took to the street Thursday to protest a drive-through lane at a new McDonald’s restaurant that developers hope to build on the corner of Bollinger Road and Miller Avenue on the San Jose-Cupertino border.

The proposed restaurant would be across the street from Hyde Middle School at 19325 Bollinger Road in Cupertino. Protestors are concerned about health and safety issues associated with the drive-through and additional traffic that may impact the nearby school.

With signs in hand, protestors gathered on the sidewalk from 3 to 4 p.m. in an effort to get their message out while afternoon commuters drove by.

Among the protestors was Dale Jones, Executive Director of Discovery Charter. Jones is also a former administrator at several schools in Cupertino Unified School District. Other protestors included parents and students from nearby schools including McAuliffe and Faria elementary schools, Hyde Middle School and Cupertino and Lynbrook high schools.

In an effort to get the attention of city leaders, San Jose and Cupertino area residents gathered more than 780 signatures to oppose the drive-through. And, at a March 28 community meeting hosted by District 1 Councilman Pete Constant, a large crowed showed up to protest the drive-through, but Constant still has not officially opposed the project.

The San Jose Planning Commission previously denied developers a permit for the drive-through, but developers are appealing that decision to the City Council which will hear it on Tuesday, April 16. Opponents to the drive-through are planning to attend the council meeting.
