Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose presents “ Sādhikā”

The Bay Area’s premiere Indian Classical Dance Company - Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose features Artistic Director Mythili Kumar in its upcoming spring concert.  Kumar has been learning, performing and imparting Bharatanatyam, the ancient style of Indian classical dance since 1962.  To celebrate 2014 which marks over 50 years of her dedication to dance, she embarked on an evocative performing tour of temples and cities in India in February 2014. Abhinaya’s spring concert on April 26, 2014 is her Bay Area presentation featuring her signature solo choreographic works that have been critically acclaimed over the years.

Kumar is well recognized in her field of Bharatanatyam dance as a dancer, teacher and award winning choreographer.  She was performing by the age of eleven and trained under gurus in three classical dance styles of Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi and Odissi, performing extensively in India before moving to the U.S. in 1978.  She began teaching dance in 1980 in the Bay Area, and in 1990 incorporated the school as a non-profit organization, the Abhinaya Dance Company. Since the first group production, ‘Shiva – the Cosmic Dancer’ in 1986, to ‘Gandhi’ in 2012, Kumar has choreographed and directed over 20 innovative and professional-quality productions.  She has been honored with awards such as the Isadora Duncan Sustained achievement award, the Malonga Casquelourd Lifetime Achievement Award from World Arts West, and the title of Vishwa Kala Bharati from Bharat Kalachar, India.
