“The Sacred Art of Prayer: A Spiritual Journey of the Heart” Presents “On Stability: The Rhythm & Balance of Life.”

The Sacred Art of Prayer: Quiet Afternoon with Jesus Reyes, Canon for Congregational Development in the Diocese of El Camino Real.

Have you listened to your heart lately? If we take this question literally, we will discover that the heart has a rhythm. And, in normal circumstances, the rhythm changes in agreement with our physical or emotional state of being. However, if we take this question metaphorically, then the question becomes a lot more complex, fascinating, and thought provoking. The point is that listening to the heart makes us more human. The Day two in “The Sacred Art of Prayer” invites you to explore the Benedictine concept of “Stability of Life” through the attentive listening to our heart. Stability in Benedictine Spirituality does not equal to “finding a comfort zone.” It is more about finding peace in my heart regardless of the challenges that surround my life.

Spiritual stability is about learning to recognize the presence  of God in “the middle of the storm.” Remember the Gospel story of Jesus and his disciples, when their boat was caught in the middle of the storm, at night? (Mark 4:35-41) Jesus tells his disciples, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” So, our learning here is about finding stability of life by learning to trust the presence of God in the rhythm of our heart.
