Tree Trimming on a Thursday Morning

I awoke to the doorbell ringing.

:::grunt snuffle snort::: It's 7:30 a.m. Was that really the doorbell? Maybe I just dreamt it. Dang. Better go check.

Outside my door stood a man in a hard hat and bright orange shirt. Very bright for 7:30 a.m. Blindingly bright.

"Good morning, ma'am. I'm with the City of Cupertino. You might want to move your cars out of the driveway. We're going to be blocking it when we trim your trees."

Ah, question answered. Ever since those little green tags went up on Cupertino trees in April, I had wondered about tree maintenance. If the City owns my tree, does that mean it will trim it, remove dangerous branches, and otherwise keep it tidy? It appears the answer is a resounding, "Yes."

"We take care of everything," one of the workers told me. "We even remove the tree if necessary."

After moving my car, I sat out on the front porch for a bit, sipping coffee and watching the trimmers do their thing. It really is a wonderful sight to see people working when you're just sitting and having a morning coffee! And my maintenance-free tree has never looked so lovely to me than after I realized I don't have to get up there and trim those branches.
