Faces of Rotary - Dr. Hsing Kung, President 2012/13

Introducing The Rotary Club of Cupertino's 2012/13 President Dr. Hsing Kung.

It is my distinct pleasure to introduce The Rotary Club of Cupertino's new President for the fiscal year 2012 - 2013, Dr. Hsing Kung.

Dr. Hsing Kung is a well-respected community leader and a successful entrepreneur.  He is married and has one daughter. His family has resided in the South Bay for 30 years and has always been actively involved in service to our community.

Hsing Kung received a BS degree from National Cheng Kung University, a MS degree from University of Texas at Austin and a Ph.D degree from UC Berkeley, all in Electrical Engineering. He also received an MBA degree from Santa Clara University.

From 1974 to 1978, he was with Optoelectronics Division of Hewlett Packard. In 1983, Dr. Kung joined SDL Inc. as a co-founder and VP, manufacturing. SDL has become a world leading optical communication public company.

In 1997, he joined American Xtal Technology (AXT) as a Sr. Vice President, Business Development. In 2000,  he co-founded Pine Photonics Communication and served as President/CEO until acquired by Opnext.

After Pine Photonics was acquired by Opnext Inc, he continued to serve as Sr. VP of Opnext until 2005. From 2006, he is managing partner of Acorn Campus Ventures. Curently, he serves as Chairman of Luxnet Corporation and serves on the board of several optoelectronics companies.

In recent years, Dr. Kung has been devoted to promote Chinese-American participation in the main stream community. He was a former board member of Fremont Union High School District Board. In his tenure, he has made significant contribution to promote multi-culture climate in high schools.

In addition, he also involved and served on the board of  many other community organizations and foundations, including Cupertino Rotary, Institute of Computer Technology, West Valley-Mission Community College Foundation, Fremont Union High School Foundation and United Way Silicon Valley.

In 2001, he was invited to participate in Class XIII of American Leadership Forum (ALF) and later served on the board from 2002 to 2009. He joined Cupertino Rotary in 1994 and has actively involved in Rotary activity.

Currently, he serves on Vision New American Board, APAPA advisory board and APALI steering board. In 2008, he was invited to join the founding board of 1stACT, a venture to enrich Arts and Culture. in Silicon Valley. In December, 2010, he was appointed to Board Trustee of California State University (CSU Board) by the governor.

I too was at this Challenge Day. It was my 6th. I first volunteered because I watched the programRead More on MTV "If You Really Knew Me" when my son was being severely bullied in middle school and saw the program was offered when he was a freshman in high school. My company strongly supports me volunteering for this and allows me to take the day off work to attend. I am continually humbled by what these teens share and saddened at what some of them have experienced in their short lives. This program is so valuable. I think every school should offer it and every parent should attend. It helps us to realize that we need to think twice before we judge or assume things about others when we know nothing about them. It is the volunteering opportunity that I look forward to participating in every year.
