The Coop Big Dig

Making Cupertino a more fun place to live and work.

As a follow-up to my previous piece on making Cupertino a more fun and interesting place to live I have given it another fifteen minutes or so of thought and come up with The Coop Big Dig. Please feel free to comment and expand on this idea.

Overview; we put Stevens Creek Boulevard underground from So. De Anza Blvd to Stelling and sell the air rights to a developer who will build a “Main Street” over The Big Dig. There would of course be exits from the Underground to main shopping areas and the connecting streets.

My vision is of an area of a half mile or so, sort of like Santana Row, only more in keeping with who The Coop has become over the last few decades. There would be commercial on the first level and housing above so that people could live and work on Main Street. How cool would it be to have a huge Apple store as the gemstone of this inspiration?

Maybe this would even attract high-end shops like that on Rodeo Drive and downtown Montreal. Not sure if you have been to Quebec City, Canada and seen what they did with the waterfront area, it is quite amazing and successful IMHO.  Q-City has done a wonderful job of marring the old walled City with the new waterfront area below. If only we could fit in a Funicular with The Coop Big Dig.

No! Well then, I have more ideas coming, watch for The Coop HOHO, my next Blog, or the solution to The Really Big Hole in the Village.
