VTA to Purchase Energy Efficient Buses

Buses with better fuel economy and free Wi-Fi are on their way.

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority has approved the $32.9 million purchase of 29 clean energy buses to replace older rapid transit buses running on El Camino Real, according to a VTA spokeswoman.

The new articulated buses, approved by the agency's Board of Directors on Thursday, will be powered by hybrid diesel technology, according to VTA spokeswoman Brandi Childress.

They will produce 95 percent lower nitrogen oxide emissions and 80 percent lower particulate matter emissions compared to regular diesel buses.

In addition, they will have a 25 percent better fuel economy, Childress said.
The buses will feature additional bicycle capacity and will be equipped with free 4G Wi-Fi access, Childress said.
