Back to the Future: High School

School starts in August—again! But this year, I'm the parent of a high school freshman. Wish ME luck.

The autumn equinox on September 22 marks the celestial end of summer, but that’s just because God created the sun and earth before creating school.  Everyone knows that the first day of school is the true end of summer.

So despite the same schedule every year, I'm always surprised, and not just a little blue, that summer ended this week for our elementary school district—a schedule which ought to be a crime in this third week in August. Our high school district, nearly as criminal, starts Monday.

Whatever happened to the day after Labor Day? After all, the whole school schedule is set up so our 10-year-olds can help with the harvest. I guess that's just too hard of a row to hoe for these here younguns when they are a'totin' their smartphones and a'downloadin' their apps.

Still, here we are, and for me, it's an eventful school year because my daughter is starting high school. I'm learning the lingo. She's been to "HOP" (Homestead Orientation Program) and "round-up" to pick up her schedule and gym clothes. If you drive by Homestead High this week, that joint is jumpin'. With so much going on, you would think school had already started. Volleyball tryouts, tennis tryouts, football tryouts, the band is marching, the drum corps is drumming, the color guard is coloring.

If the high school is this busy this week, I'm staying far away next week. The good news is that the school is about a mile from our house, so I can stay away. Enjoy your walk to school, honey! Did you say it is raining? Oh, dear. Take an umbrella. Have a nice day! After all, I walked to school every day, in the snow, uphill, both ways, barefoot, year round in St. Louis humidity.

Discovering that the advisory class assignments are alphabetical takes me back to that St. Louis suburb, where I sat behind Christie Lang year after year, and my good buddy Susie Marsh just squeaked into the La - Ma group. I expect I'll have a few other nostalgia moments, but mostly I'll be finding my way throughout the four years along with my daughter.

The class of 2015 is in a different world than my unnamed graduation year (but think polyester). I know my daughter is up to it. But am I?

Go Mustangs!
