"Top Performer" honors for Kaiser Permanente's SilVal hospitals

In all, 27 Kaiser Permanente hospitals honored

Kaiser Permanente’ Silicon Valley Hospitals have all been named as “Top Performers” in quality by a national organization that accredits and oversees healthcare facilities.  The hospitals---Kaiser Permanente Redwood City, Santa Clara, and San Jose----were among 27 Kaiser Permanente medical facilities honored by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations for exemplary performance in using evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, children’s asthma, stroke and venous thromboembolism, as well as inpatient psychiatric services.

"At Kaiser Permanente, we have been – and will continue to be – focused on improving the quality of the care we offer to our more than 9.1 million members," said Kaiser Permanente Chief Executive Officer Bernard J. Tyson. "Our physicians and care teams continue to eliminate variance by using evidence-based protocols that are proven to improve care."

The Joint Commission routinely makes unannounced inspections of US hospitals, and audits their records of methods being used in providing patient care. To be considered a Top Performer, hospitals must show better than 95-percent compliance with established accountability measures. Each accountability measure represents an evidence-based practice – for example, giving aspirin at arrival for heart attack patients, giving antibiotics one hour before surgery, and providing a home management plan for children with asthma. These accountability measures are closely linked to positive patient outcomes.

Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara was noted twice in the “Top Performer” announcement:  for  more than 95% compliance with accountability measures for  heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, and surgical care. KP Santa Clara is a regional center for heart surgery, advanced pediatric care, and cancer treatment.  It was also listed as a top performer for high-quality inpatient psychiatric care.

“Our team here at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara works hard every day to insure our patients get world class, personalized, high quality care,” said Chris Boyd, Senior Vice President and Area Manager of Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara.

Similarly noted was Kaiser Permanente San Jose. KP San Jose is a regional center for spine care and medical genetics.

“This is a high honor from the Joint Commission,” said Irene Chavez, Senior Vice President and Area Manager of the Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center.  “Rigidly following evidence-based protocols is how Kaiser Permanente improves the health of our members every day.”

Also listed as a “Top Performer” was the Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Medical Center. Soon to open a new hospital, KP Redwood City is a regional center for neurosciences and neurosurgery for all of Kaiser Permanente Northern California.

Frank Beirne, Senior Vice President and Area Manager for Kaiser Permanente Redwood City said “The Joint Commission has recognized we are committed to continuously improving care and safety for our patients by following evidence based measures of performance."

Redwood City, Santa Clara, and San Jose Kaiser Permanente hospitals also earned a top-score “A” rating for patient safety from the national Leapfrog Group, a coalition of public and private employee healthcare purchasers. In all, 18 KP hospitals in Northern California earned an “A” rating for safety.
