Cupertino Teen Earns Medal at Chemistry Olympiad

The recent high school grad wowed judges in Moscow.

Stephen Ting earned a silver medal at the 45th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), held in Moscow July 15-20.

Ting was one of four high school students or recent grads who represented the United States at the competition. Each of his teammates also won medals.

They competed against teams from more than 70 other countries. The competition included two grueling, 5 hour written exams and a test of their laboratory skills.

They also squeezed in some fun while they were in Russia, including sightseeing.

“I owe a gracious thank you to my teammates, our guide Anton Sinitskiy, all IChO participants, mentors, fellow study camp participants, friends, teachers and my parents for making my experience in the Chemistry Olympiad a wonderful and fulfilling one,” said Ting.

He is a 2013 Monta Vista High School graduate. Ting will enter Stanford University in the fall.  He’ll major in chemistry.

The U.S team was sponsored by the American Chemical Society.
