Big Week Ahead for De Anza Men’s Basketball

De Anza Men's Basketball to Play Three Road Games This Week

The turkey is gone and the stuffing and mashed potatoes have been consumed; it is time to get back to the business of basketball for the De Anza Dons. Coming off a 1-2 start to the season and the Thanksgiving break the De Anza College Men’s Basketball team plays three games between November 28 and December 2.

The Dons began the season with two losses in the Las Positas College Tournament. In both games, the Dons had the lead at half time and into the second half but could not close the deal. De Anza got its first win of the season at Skyline College, where they dominated the Trojans, tallying a final score of 63-46.

Over the first three games, the Dons have been led in scoring by freshman point guard Dawson Johnson (Castro Valley HS), who has averaged 17 points per game.  He also leads the team in assists, is tied for second in rebounding, and a 43% three point shooter. Sophomore guard/wing George Henderson (Emory HS) is third on the team in scoring at 8.7 ppg and leads the team in rebounding. Strong interior play by both Abu Tratter (St. Francis HS) and Shaquille Gilbert (Aquinas HS) was key in the Dons’ victory over the Trojans.

The Dons continue to be road warriors as they travel to sister-school Foothill College on Wednesday November 28, at 7 pm. De Anza continues on the road with a two-game shootout, at Cabrillo College, Saturday December 1 at 5 pm, versus Butte College and close on Sunday, at 3 pm, versus Sierra College.

It's difficult to know what's going on in a kid's mind unless they feel confident enough to open upRead More and talk. And this program helps us adults to learn to listen differently.

I too was at this Challenge Day. It was my 6th. I first volunteered because I watched the programRead More on MTV "If You Really Knew Me" when my son was being severely bullied in middle school and saw the program was offered when he was a freshman in high school. My company strongly supports me volunteering for this and allows me to take the day off work to attend. I am continually humbled by what these teens share and saddened at what some of them have experienced in their short lives. This program is so valuable. I think every school should offer it and every parent should attend. It helps us to realize that we need to think twice before we judge or assume things about others when we know nothing about them. It is the volunteering opportunity that I look forward to participating in every year.
