5-Year-Old Vista Court Boy Dies After Being Struck by Neighbor's Car

A slow-speed accident on Vista Court takes the life of a boy who was riding his scooter on the street on which he lived.

A 5-year-old boy riding his scooter on Vista Court who was struck by a neighbor’s car Tuesday night has died, authorities said.

A male driver in his 30s was backing out of his driveway on the eight-house court in his Ford Focus shortly after 7 p.m. when he heard a thump, according to a report by Santa Clara County Sheriff’s office.

The driver and neighbors quickly picked up the boy, who was wearing a helmet at the time, and called 911 at about 7:17 p.m. It is unknown at this time if the boy’s parents were nearby. Deputies and emergency workers were on the scene within minutes and found the boy conscious and breathing. He was taken to an area hospital for injuries, which were unknown at the time, according to Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Jose Cardoza.

Deputies were notified by the hospital at about 11:45 p.m. Tuesday that the boy succumbed to his injuries.

The driver’s name is not being released because he is not being charged with a crime. The boy’s name is not being released at this time, due to his age.

“It’s just a very unfortunate accident. It was a slow-speed type of accident. The Sheriff’s Office extends their sympathy to the young boy’s family for this tragic incident,” Cardoza said.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to play any part in the accident, he said.

The Sheriff’s Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating the child’s death, and the Sheriff’s Traffic Accident Reconstruction Specialist (STARS) Team is investigated the accident.
