The incident caused a short evacuation of nearby businesses this morning.

Homestead Square Shopping Center was evacuated for less than an hour this morning, after a construction crew accidentally cut a gas line.

Santa Clara County Fire Department Battalion Chief Ron Vega said a backhoe broke a 1-inch gas line at about 7:30 a.m. at the strip-mall, which is located at Homestead Road and North De Anza Boulevard in Cupertino.

Businesses were evacuated for about an hour until 8:30 a.m., Vega said. The pipe was located in the "back alley" section of the shopping mall, which is currently undergoing renovations, he added.

No injuries were reported, and Pacific Gas & Electric Company representatives arrived on the scene at about 8:30 a.m. to permanently replace the damaged pipe, Vega said.

Federal investigators were scheduled to inspect pipes in the area following multiple blasts a few years ago, Patch reported in 2011. Seven leaks were reportedly found by PG&E crews in 2-inch pipes that deliver gas to homes right by these same streets in 2011.
