Bicyclist Hit at Intersection of Monroe Street and San Tomas Expressway

Daniel Arreola of Santa Clara died from injuries sustained when he was hit at the Santa Clara intersection.

The Santa Clara County medical examiner's office has identified a bicyclist who died Wednesday from injuries he suffered after colliding with a car late Tuesday as Daniel Arreola, 18, of Santa Clara.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of a collision on the corner of San Tomas Expressway and Monroe Street at 11:44 p.m. Tuesday.

A Toyota Camry was traveling north on the San Tomas Expressway when the driver saw Arreola crossing the road in a crosswalk at Monroe Street, according to the CHP.

The driver of the Toyota had a green light and tried to brake to avoid colliding with Arreola, but was unable to stop in time.

Arreola suffered severe injuries and was transported to Valley Medical Center, where he died around 12:45 a.m.

The driver of the Toyota stopped and cooperated with investigators, who blocked off Monroe Street for several hours. Alcohol or drugs is not believed to be a factor in the collision, according to the CHP.

The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet, CHP officers said.

It's difficult to know what's going on in a kid's mind unless they feel confident enough to open upRead More and talk. And this program helps us adults to learn to listen differently.

I too was at this Challenge Day. It was my 6th. I first volunteered because I watched the programRead More on MTV "If You Really Knew Me" when my son was being severely bullied in middle school and saw the program was offered when he was a freshman in high school. My company strongly supports me volunteering for this and allows me to take the day off work to attend. I am continually humbled by what these teens share and saddened at what some of them have experienced in their short lives. This program is so valuable. I think every school should offer it and every parent should attend. It helps us to realize that we need to think twice before we judge or assume things about others when we know nothing about them. It is the volunteering opportunity that I look forward to participating in every year.
