Bicyclist Killed on San Tomas Expressway

A San Jose woman struck and killed a Santa Clara man riding his bicycle late Tuesday morning.

A 59-year-old Santa Clara man on a bicycle was killed after a woman struck him with her car late this morning in Campbell, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Around 11:40 a.m., Melanie Souza, 20, of San Jose, was driving a 2004 Toyota south on San Tomas Expressway, south of Campbell Avenue, while the bicyclist was traveling in the same direction on the shoulder, according to the CHP.

Souza allegedly drove into the shoulder and struck the bicyclist before fleeing the scene, the CHP said.

The bicyclist was taken to Valley Medical Center in San Jose where he was pronounced dead at 12:35 p.m.

The Santa Clara County medical examiner's office has not released the victim's name.

Souza later returned to the scene of the fatality and was questioned by investigators and released from custody. Authorities continue to investigate the crash.

The CHP said Souza was wearing her seat belt and alcohol was not a factor in the crash. The man was wearing a bicycle helmet.
