Big Rig Accident Victim ID'd

The woman who was hit and killed Tuesday by a truck on Foothill was a 79-year-old Cupertino resident.

The woman killed on Tuesday when a big-rig truck hit her as she was in a crosswalk on Foothill Boulevard has been identified as 79-year-old Xiulin Du, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.

Du, a Cupertino resident, was struck while starting to cross North Foothill Boulevard near Cupertino Road at about 7 a.m. Tuesday, Santa Clara County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jose Cardoza said.

The accident and the subsequent investigation snarled traffic in the area causing backups on I-280.

The driver of the Sysco food service big-rig was headed south on Foothill when Du was struck, Cardoza said.

During the investigation, the driver was cooperative and criminal charges are not expected in the case, Cardoza said.

"It's most likely going to be ruled an accident," he said.

"There were no speed issues," he said. "It just looks like an unfortunate accident."
