80 Weekend DUI Arrests Reported in Area

Law enforcement officers around Santa Clara County are participating in a crackdown on drunken driving, and reporting arrest figures each day for 18 days.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, coordinated by the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, are participating in a Summer/Labor Day National Anti-DUI crackdown, and are in day five since the initiative began Friday.

Arrests occur during routine traffic enforcement and special "Avoid the 13" DUI deployments overnight in Santa Clara County, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Arrests for Los Altos Hills, Cupertino, and Saratoga appear in the Sheriff's Office arrest figures, but are not broken down. Similarly, no further information was available on the CHP arrest locations, which were made mostly in Santa Clara County south of Mountain View, but span wide swaths of highways from Mountain View to Hollister.

Funding for the program, which pays for extra police patrols, was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

All arrest numbers are provisional. Those agencies that have not yet reported by 9:35 a.m. are marked NR for "Not Reported."

It's difficult to know what's going on in a kid's mind unless they feel confident enough to open upRead More and talk. And this program helps us adults to learn to listen differently.

I too was at this Challenge Day. It was my 6th. I first volunteered because I watched the programRead More on MTV "If You Really Knew Me" when my son was being severely bullied in middle school and saw the program was offered when he was a freshman in high school. My company strongly supports me volunteering for this and allows me to take the day off work to attend. I am continually humbled by what these teens share and saddened at what some of them have experienced in their short lives. This program is so valuable. I think every school should offer it and every parent should attend. It helps us to realize that we need to think twice before we judge or assume things about others when we know nothing about them. It is the volunteering opportunity that I look forward to participating in every year.
