Getting Help for the Moore Family

Cupertino is already rallying to help the Moores, who lost their home to fire Monday morning.

Cupertino's ground troops are mobilizing around the Moore family, who lost all their belongings and home in a Monday morning.

The fire, which investigators say started in the garage, consumed two cars, two car seats, the clothes of Kevin and Lydia Moore and their four children, their furniture, family photos and memorabilia—everything.

Susanne Millar is coordinating a community-wide effort on the family’s behalf. She’s already put together a list that includes what to hold off on so that the family gets what it needs first.

Millar created a website for the cause, and here's her outreach letter:

Moore Family Fund

This is a community-based effort to help the Moore Family recover from a devastating fire that destroyed their house on May 23. We would like to come together as a community to help provide assistance to the Moore's in a way that will be helpful, healing, and productive.

Susanne Millar will be coordinating a community-wide effort, and you can contact her athelping.moore.family@gmail.com with the subject line “Moore family,” or call her cellphone at 408-318-7991.

The Moores will be staying with family for a few days until they figure out what to do next. Ideally, they would like to rent a home in the Cupertino area until they can rebuild their house. If you know of a rental available that would fit the family of six (kids are ages 1 to 10), please send that information to helping.moore.family@gmail.com right away.

What is needed now?

  • Gift cards would be extremely helpful at this point. The Moores will need to replace every piece of clothing from shoes and socks to shirts, pants and shorts. Gift cards to Target, JCPenney, Sears, Macy's, Safeway, CVS Pharmacy, for example, will be gratefully accepted at the Lincoln Elementary School Office (Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., except Memorial Day through June 17). The school office is also open during Staff Learning Day, Friday, May 27. Your child may give it to his/her teacher and they will forward it to the office. Lincoln Elementary School Office Address: 21710 McClellan Rd.
  • Monetary Donations/Gifts: We are working on possibly setting up a donation account to accept funds for the family. Stay tuned. We are also working on a way families can donate online. Stay tuned.
  • Clothing Donations: Stay tuned on clothing donations. Given that the Moore’s currently don’t have a place to live, we want to provide clothing for them, but not inundate them. We will post more information soon. They have been provided immediate clothing needs for now. Thank you to everyone who donated!

We may create a community place where we will further coordinate donations, collections, or just plain old well wishes. Stay tuned.
