No Fatalities, but 215 DUI Arrests in Summer Campaign

The end of summer drunk driving campaign is on.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, which coordinates the "Avoid the 13" drunk driving campaigns throughout the year, have reported 215 arrests from 15 law enforcement agencies in the county since the summer/Labor Day campaign began Aug. 17.

DUI checkpoints will be conducted on Saturday September 1, in the cities of San Jose and Milpitas. Extra DUI units called "saturation patrols" will be deployed in the cities of Campbell, Milpitas, Los Altos, Mountain View, Los Gatos, Palo Alto, San Jose, Santa Clara, Gilroy, Sunnyvale, Morgan Hill, Cupertino, Saratoga, Los Altos Hills, and the unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County.

Research has shown that the end of summer and the Labor Day weekend is a dangerous period for accidents related to drunk driving.

Arrests made in Los Altos Hills, Cupertino and Saratoga are handled by the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department, or the California Highway Patrol, and figures from those agencies are not broken down by city.

It's difficult to know what's going on in a kid's mind unless they feel confident enough to open upRead More and talk. And this program helps us adults to learn to listen differently.

I too was at this Challenge Day. It was my 6th. I first volunteered because I watched the programRead More on MTV "If You Really Knew Me" when my son was being severely bullied in middle school and saw the program was offered when he was a freshman in high school. My company strongly supports me volunteering for this and allows me to take the day off work to attend. I am continually humbled by what these teens share and saddened at what some of them have experienced in their short lives. This program is so valuable. I think every school should offer it and every parent should attend. It helps us to realize that we need to think twice before we judge or assume things about others when we know nothing about them. It is the volunteering opportunity that I look forward to participating in every year.
