Sheriff's Deputy Returns Fire at Suspect at Stevens Creek Boulevard and Tantau Avenue
A person suspected of involvement in a car theft was stopped Monday night.
Shots were fired Monday night at a Cupertino intersection when a Santa Clara County sheriff's deputy stopped a person walking, according to the sheriff's office.
According to the San Jose Mercury News, the pedestrian, who was stopped at the intersection of Stevens Creek Boulevard and Tantau Avenue around 9:20 p.m., fired at the deputy, who then returned fire.
The officer was not hurt, and the suspect, who was hit, was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and taken into custody as a person possibly associated with a stolen vehicle, sheriff's officials said.

The San Jose Mercury reported that "after the stop, the suspect ran, turned and shot at the deputy, but did not strike the officer. The deputy returned fire and hit the suspect, who fell to the ground."
The area around the incident was shut down and is being investigated.
