Investigators believe Schmidt was crossing East Homestead Road at Quince Avenue in his wheelchair when a westbound motorist driving a late 1990s, dark-colored midsize sedan struck him.

The car dragged the man about 300 feet, police said. The driver fled the scene afterward and has not been found. The suspect is described as a male with a medium build who was wearing a white shirt, according to police.
