Despite "nearly 95 percent of the students from the Class of 2011" passing the California High School Exit Exam, California's Department of Education's final July 2010 to May 2011 results released Wednesday morning highlight the difficulties for some Santa Clara County students to pass the standardize test.

Santa Clara County's Class of 2011 (grade 12) performed their best in November 2010 and May 2011, outperforming the state in math by six percentage points in November for a 35 percent pass percentage and by five points in English-language arts in March 2011 for a 30 percent pass rate.

"Students first take this test in grade ten" and have opportunities to retake the test 11th grade twice and "have up to five times to take the test" as seniors (grade 12), according to the California Department of Education

To pass the mathematics portion of the exam, a student must score "approximately 55 percent of items correct" and to pass the English-language arts portion students need to record "approximately 60 percent of items correct," according to state guidelines.
