There's one more reason to see , the Mandarin play at the San Jose Repertory Theatre Aug. 6-7—to see Orrin Mahoney, Cupertino city councilman, in his debut performance.
"I will play a Flying Tiger pilot that rescues the main character during World War II," he says. "I play the pilot 60 years later when they reunite. It's a brief, non-speaking role, but it should be fun."
Mahoney was "drafted" for the part by Joyce Hsu, the Palo Alto playwright who wrote Soaring Over a Century. They met in 2006 at an annual Cupertino Rotary event, Global Elegance—then called Eastern Elegance—at Hsu's Atherton's estate.
"I have run into Joyce from time to time since then, and when she thought of an 'old Caucasian gentleman,' she thought of me," he says.
