Poll: What Should be Done with Mt. Um's Radar Tower?

Tell us what you think should be done with "The Cube" up on top of Mt. Umunhum

A public meeting on will be held Wednesday at Quinlan Community Center. The tower sits amid the Almaden Air Force Station and is owned by Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District.

The agency, which aims to preserve open space in the area, plans to make the site a recreational destination. It is seeking public input on what to do with the tower.

The meeting at Quinlan will begin with an open house at 6:30 p.m. and allow for public input later. There may be limited time in which to voice your opinion at the meeting so use the comment space here to be heard, and take the poll.

Your comments and poll results—which are unscientific—will be forwarded to the open space district.

Stay tuned to Patch, which will have a follow on article about the meeting.

It seems a shame to tear down something this historic. Does anyone see a benefit to getting rid of it?

Anne, your comment is spot on. Thank you for your support. Truthfully, Option 2 really isn't an option...as stated before by the Mercury News Editorial (written by the Merc), that's the worst compromise of all.   To the valley residents, looking up at the summit and seeing no tower is the same as Option 1 or 2...same effect.  So the Valley residents can't seem to ever understand option 2.

It was a long time before I figured out what that tower was, and set out to visit it. It's a weirdo-fun bit of Cold War history that could be used as a museum or some such. We still have echoes of nuke missile bases in the Bay Area (SF., and deep in the Santa Cruz Mountains) where the idea was we'd -nuke- the Russian bomb-droppers out of the sky before they could make over the valley. Wild.

And it seems that if the tower goes away, the people who follow behind us will never truly understand what the site meant to us in Cold War terms
