Cupertino Voters Stay True to Their Purple Reputation

Neighboring Saratogans voted against Prop 30, in favor of Prop 31, against Prop 37, and against Measure A. Those votes were contrary to how the rest of the cities in our area cast their ballots.

It's probably fair to call the voters of Saratoga contrarians. While much of the rest of Silicon Valley was approving Jerry Brown's Prop 30 to raise money for schools, Saratogans voted against the measure. Staying true to its purple blend of blue and red views, Cupertinians were fairly measured in their turnout on measures and candidates.

Percentage-wise, 16 percent in Cupertino voted for Mitt Romney, while 39 percent voted for Barack Obama.

Cupertino voted a percentage point against the Prop 31, the State Budget measure, while the Saratoga voted for it.

Silicon Valley cities were split on Prop 37, the measure to label genetically-altered food. Cupertino said yes.

And Saratoga and Los Altos were the only cities in the Valley to vote against Measure A, the county sales tax.

What follows are numbers crunched from the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voter's website for six Silicon Valley cities from Tuesday night's election.

The percentages indicate the number of registered voters who cast their ballots for each unique race or measure. As an example, of the 28,060 registered voters in Cupertino, 39 percent cast their ballot for Barack Obama, 16 percent for Mitt Romney.

It's difficult to know what's going on in a kid's mind unless they feel confident enough to open upRead More and talk. And this program helps us adults to learn to listen differently.

I too was at this Challenge Day. It was my 6th. I first volunteered because I watched the programRead More on MTV "If You Really Knew Me" when my son was being severely bullied in middle school and saw the program was offered when he was a freshman in high school. My company strongly supports me volunteering for this and allows me to take the day off work to attend. I am continually humbled by what these teens share and saddened at what some of them have experienced in their short lives. This program is so valuable. I think every school should offer it and every parent should attend. It helps us to realize that we need to think twice before we judge or assume things about others when we know nothing about them. It is the volunteering opportunity that I look forward to participating in every year.
