Special Closed Session Today to Discuss City Manager Recruitment

The Cupertino City Council will meet at 12:30 p.m. to discuss recruitment of a new city manager, a position that's been temporarily filled since April 17.

The will meet in a special closed session today at 12:30 p.m. to discuss recruitment of a new city manager, a post that's only been temporarily filled since mid-April.

Amy Chan has been acting as , when David Knapp took a job in Highland Park, Ill. after 12 years with the city.

Knapp left the position to be closer to his son and two grandchildren. Prior to his Cupertino service, Knapp served as Los Gatos' city manager for 10 years.

Helping the city weather two recessions and authoring a number of Cupertino success stories, including the Don Burnett Memorial Bridge, Knapp has left big shoes to fill at city hall.

Looking to include the citizenry in the hiring process, the city invited Cupertino residents to put in their two-cents on what qualities they'd like to see in the next city manager via .

Surveys were due June 26.

Executive recruitment firm Peckham & McKenney has been retained in the search for suitable candidates. 

In other city news, the regularly scheduled Parks and Recreation Commission meeting for 7 p.m. tonight has been cancelled due to a lack of business. The commission will convene during a special meeting on Saturday, July 14 at 10 a.m. in the Bay Room at the Cupertino Senior Center.

I too was at this Challenge Day. It was my 6th. I first volunteered because I watched the programRead More on MTV "If You Really Knew Me" when my son was being severely bullied in middle school and saw the program was offered when he was a freshman in high school. My company strongly supports me volunteering for this and allows me to take the day off work to attend. I am continually humbled by what these teens share and saddened at what some of them have experienced in their short lives. This program is so valuable. I think every school should offer it and every parent should attend. It helps us to realize that we need to think twice before we judge or assume things about others when we know nothing about them. It is the volunteering opportunity that I look forward to participating in every year.
