Cupertino High School—also known as Tino—freshman Solin Piearcy and Lynbrook High School junior Anna Naylor cheered each other and their teammates on to victories at the Central Coast Sectional Wrestling Tournament this weekend. Piearcy and Naylor will represent their schools at the Feb. 22 State tournament.
Naylor's final match was against James Lick's Lerissa Mendoza, a friend off the mat, and the same opponent she faced in last year's CCS finals. Lynbrook's Radha Shah did well in the 98 lb. weight class, and Lynbrook freshman Sheila Metz came in fourth place in the 103 lb. class. Tino's Kayla Zager won fifth place in the 114 lb. class. Piearcy pinned last year's 132 lb. CCS champion in the first period.
Naylor again thanked her coaches, Alan Vinciquera and Bill Fatjo, who "constantly keep reminding me that they believe in me and that I can do it." She also thanked her dedicated mom, Jo, and her wrestling sister, Bridget, saying, "I'm really grateful that my mom and sister always sit around all day in a hot smelly gym just to watch me wrestle."
